Wedding Rehearsal in Calgary, Alberta
Wedding Rehearsal in Calgary, Alberta

If you’re planning your wedding, you might think a rehearsal isn’t necessary, after all, it’s “just walking down the aisle,” right? But... every wedding is unique including the people involved and a rehearsal is one of the simplest ways to reduce stress, build confidence, and create a smooth ceremony experience for you and your wedding party.

When your venue is telling you to "just meet up in a coffee shop to go over it the morning of", your Mom is telling you she's done this many times and doesn't need a rehearsal and your Fiance is telling you he will share the details with the guys at the ball game next week, you may want to continue reading for the perspective of a Wedding Planner and in particular, an Alberta Wedding Planner. Here is why I always encourage couples to include a wedding rehearsal.

every wedding is different

Back in the day, when your parents were likely tying the knot, weddings came with a ton of rules and etiquette. They had to follow specific guidelines for everything from how many people could stand up with them to how the ceremony should be set up. But these days? It's way more relaxed! The right way to do things is whatever feels good and meaningful for the couple, their crew, and their families.

That freedom is wonderful, but it also means your wedding might not follow any predictable “script.” That’s where rehearsal becomes invaluable:

  • Music and Timing: Live musicians, DJs or custom playlists mean timing needs to be practiced so you walk to the right lyric, cadence or note.

  • Unique Processional & Recessionals: Attendants, Parents, Kids and Pets, every lineup is different and needs practice to feel polished. The more unique it is, the greater the need for a rehearsal to ensure everyone is comfortable with their role.

  • Ceremony Layout: Where guests and family sit, and how you want to face them, affects movement and visibility.

    • Some Couples would rather face towards their family when reciting vows to their Partners and some prefer to have their family supporting them from behind on their side of the aisle.

    • If you're saving seats for certain Family and Friends, it's nice for them to know ahead of time so they don't have to worry if their seat will be taken while supporting you before the Ceremony starts.

    • Providing sufficient space for everyone is crucial, allowing for movement to and from the signing table, enabling performers to set up, and allowing photographers to position themselves for the perfect shot with the right people included.

Ah, Alberta! Known for its stunning landscapes and breathtaking views, but also for its ever-changing weather! While it can be a bit unpredictable, don’t let that dampen your wedding spirits. In fact, planning for a little weather whimsy can turn your special day into a delightful adventure!

  • Incorporating a Plan B: A Wedding Rehearsal is the perfect time to inform everyone of your Plan B. Think of it as your secret weapon against the elements and an essential part of ensuring a stress-free day. No matter what Mother Nature throws your way, you will be ready to embrace a little spontaneity.

calm the nerves - especially for friends and family

If everyone is well-rehearsed and confident on the morning of the wedding, you won't be overwhelmed with questions and discussions about who is doing what, when, and where, which can prevent additional anxiety or stress.

  • Safe Space for Questions: A wedding rehearsal gives everyone a safe, calm space to ask questions, walk through roles, and ease jitters before the big day while keeping the smiles and good vibes flowing!

  • Muscle Memory: Repeatedly walking through the venue or designated space three times in the same way will help you naturally recall the timing and flow.

  • Walking Speed and Standing Location:

    • Walking too fast can feel rushed, too slow can drag or look awkward. Practicing helps create a natural, elegant flow.

    • Not knowing where to stand can make your Attendants feel nervous, awkward, and vulnerable.

  • Duties as an Attendant:

    • Understanding how to adjust the Bride's train and veil and hold her bouquet while she gives her vows is crucial.

    • If you're in charge of the rings, it clarifies the plan regarding who holds them and when they should be passed rather than fumbling around at the time of the vows and increasing anxiety. This plan can vary for each wedding.

Wedding Officiant Volunteer

In the Province of Alberta, it's wonderful that you can invite a close family member or friend to officiate your wedding by obtaining a temporary license. These individuals often bring a personal touch to the ceremony, and while they may be confident speakers, they might not have formal public speaking experience. It's especially important to remember that giving them time to rehearse can help ensure they feel comfortable and prepared with the whole program, allowing them to deliver a heartfelt ceremony that reflects your vision. This consideration not only supports them but also enhances the overall experience for everyone involved.

Smooth Logistics & Last-Minute Details

A rehearsal ensures everyone knows where to be and when. It’s also the perfect moment to:

  • Introduce wedding party members who haven’t met.

  • Connect your key people with your vendors such as Day of Coordinator, Venue Manager and Officiant should they need to find a familiar face on the day of.

  • Practice with children or pets to ensure they are as comfortable as possible.

  • Align timing with venue staff, musicians, DJ, and photographer.

If your venue doesn’t allow an on-site rehearsal, your planner can recreate the flow in a similar space.

Rehearsal Dinner — Optional but Smart

Although it's not mandatory, hosting or inviting those who attended the rehearsal to a dinner afterwards along with their significant others or family members can be a great opportunity to:

  • Extend your wedding day celebrations, allowing you to celebrate with your closest family and friends in a more intimate setting. Remember, your wedding day will fly by in the blink of an eye. Take this opportunity to slow it down and make the meaningful connections you are so looking forward to!

  • Free yourself up to visit with more guests on your wedding day, ensuring that you have meaningful interactions with everyone who came to celebrate your love.

  • Shift some speeches and toasts to a more private setting, ensuring that the speeches on your wedding day remain brief and captivating and your guests stay engaged.

  • Give key players a chance to ask final questions in a relaxed environment.

Your Planner or Day of Coordinator can guide a volunteer officiant so they feel confident, and help your attendants know what to handle themselves so you’re not pulled in every direction. Even if you’ve been in weddings before, your day won’t follow the same script.
