The Pros and Cons of a Wedding Day First Look

One of the most magical moments in a wedding is the first time the couple sees each other.  Most Wedding Planners will say this is one of their most favourite parts of the day.  Traditionally, this moment happens when the bride walks down the aisle. However, many couples are opting for a "first look” or a private moment before the ceremony where the couple sees each other for the first time. Like any decision, choosing a first look comes with its own set of pros and cons but here you will find a Wedding Planner’s guide to help you decide if a first look is right for you and your Partner.

The Pros of a Wedding Day First Look

  1. Intimate Moment: A wedding day first look provides an opportunity for a private, intimate moment between the couple. Away from the eyes of guests, it's a chance to connect, share emotions, and create a memory that is just yours.

  2. Settles the Nerves: Connecting with each other in a peaceful location before the ceremony begins can help to calm the jitters. There is freedom to talk, hug, make jokes, look at each other & feel the weight of what this day really means. I think that alone is the most beneficial aspect of a first look!

  3. Photographic Opportunities: With a first look, you can capture raw, emotional reactions in a controlled environment, ensuring beautiful, candid couple wedding photos which can sometimes get missed if you have large families or bridal parties.

  4. Extended Celebration for you and your Guests: A first look can streamline the timeline, allowing for more time to enjoy the wedding reception. By taking wedding photos before the ceremony, you won't need to step away during cocktail hour (or two)  giving you more time to mingle with guests and your guests will have less time to get hangry.

  5. Genuine Reactions: Without the pressure of the ceremony, you can express your emotions more freely in a safe environment.  Whether it’s tears, laughter, or a heartfelt conversation, a first look allows for a more authentic exchange.  Some couples also exchange private vows with each other during this time.  Noone needs to hide their emotions.

  6. Allows for Creativity: A first look can add an element of fun in the way your are revealed or the location you choose. Couples may choose a “first touch”  while reciting their private vows or they may have a first look with bridal party or family members.

  7. Looking your best: An emotional first look allows you to have time to re-touch your make-up should the tears flow or fix your hair if the wind blows.

  8. More Couple Photos in your Gallery: There will be more images of the two of you to choose from.

The Cons of a Wedding Day First Look

  1. Break from Tradition: For some, the tradition of seeing each other for the first time at the altar is a cherished moment. A first look deviates from this tradition, which may not sit well with couples or family members who value traditional wedding elements.

  2. Logistical Challenges: Organizing a first look requires careful planning and coordination, adding another event to an already busy wedding day. This can increase stress and require more time management.  There is also the risk of leaving your guests waiting for longer than expected.

  3. Less Anticipation: Some couples fear that having a first look might lessen the impact of the moment when the bride walks down the aisle. The element of surprise and the build-up of emotions might be diluted.

  4. Weather / Lighting / Season: If your wedding is outdoors, the time of day, weather and season can affect your first look photos. Harsh midday sun or unexpected rain can complicate the logistics and quality of the wedding photos. Days are much shorter in winter months limiting time for outdoor daylight photoshoots.

  5. Additional Costs: A first look can potentially add to the cost of wedding photography and videography. Extra hours of coverage may be needed to capture the first look and pre-ceremony photos.

  6. Earlier Start: Your day will begin a little earlier to accommodate this moment.

Conclusion

Deciding whether to have a first look on your wedding day is a personal choice that depends on your priorities and vision for your big day. While a first look offers intimacy, better photo opportunities, and a chance to calm nerves, it also requires careful planning and may break with tradition. Weighing these pros and cons will help you determine what feels right for you and your partner, ensuring that your wedding day is everything you've dreamed it would be.
